UPDATE: Funding drive relaunch to create three high quality training rooms.

Over the Summer the team at GDPU (Gulu Disabled Persons Union, Gulu, Northern Uganda) have been busy using the funds raised through this appeal to transform a large multi-purpose Hall.

It has been a substantial undertaking and a great achievement. Everything has been renewed from the ceiling downwards, with new custom-built furniture and a new name – Te-Yat Hall.

The new Community Hall takes shape

It has already been put to good use. It hosted a graduation ceremony for students of GDPU’s music for change programme,: Viva Wer Waa, as well as training for Peer Mentors and current trainees. It has also been available for hire by other organisations.

There are many more plans for the space, including business and life skills training, community events and regional conferences of Disability Unions. Modern, fully accessible sit-down WC conveniences are currently being constructed, designed to meet the needs of all people with disabilities, visitors, trainees and staff.

Now that autumn is here and Christmas is approaching, we at ETC we are back on our fundraising journey! We are determined to finish the job we gave ourselves so that GDPU can continue to develop and provide much-needed opportunities.

The next task is to tackle the rundown classrooms!  Plans are now in place for three high quality vocational training rooms and a new dormitory for the girls who have to travel from the countryside to access training opportunities that are otherwise difficult for them to reach.

Old classrooms, waiting for the relaunch

The aim is to hit a target of 70-100 trainees per year. To achieve this, the quality of the learning environment matters. Parents and donors need to have confidence that the facilities are safe, welcoming and fit for purpose.

Teaching in a current classroom

As Trustees of GDPU we try to visit Gulu every year or two to catch up with our partners, the Peer Mentors and ex-students. We can’t wait to meet everyone in the Te-Yat Hall, and it would be wonderful if one of our jobs next year will be to host the opening ceremony for the new classrooms!

Please help us take this next step by making a generous donation to our relaunched fundraising drive. Every contribution will help GDPU provide better facilities and, in turn, more opportunities for young people with disabilities.
